European Anti-Poverty Network calls on EU Leaders to set an ambitious target for poverty reduction in ‘Europe 2020 strategy

The year 2010 is the time for EU leaders and national governments to move from rhetoric to action. And to do so, the EU must speed up its action on the basis of a few principles and assets: reinforcing the European social model; improving the effectiveness of the open method of coordination; promoting fundamental rights at work and the principle of ‘decent work’; and incorporating the issue of poor
workers into the framework of European-level social dialogue.

Social NGOs also announced that an EU Poverty and Social Exclusion Awareness Week will take place from 24 – 30 May 2010 and urged the media to devote time and space to raising awareness about poverty and social exclusion, says Fintan Farrell, Director of the European Anti-Poverty Network

Inspired by its founding principle of solidarity, the European Union has joined forces with its Member States to make 2010 the European Year For Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion. The key objectives are to raise public awareness about these issues and renew the political commitment of the EU and its Member States to combat
