European Year of Volunteering highlights cooperation across borders

The European Year of Volunteering 2011 (EYV2011) has officially been launched at a ceremony attended by both the European Commission and the Hungarian EU Presidency. The event also marked the inauguration of the Hungarian stage of the EYV2011 Tour – a one-year travelling road show to give volunteering organisations the opportunity to showcase their work.

EYV2011 coincides with UN-led activities to mark the tenth anniversary of the International Year of Volunteers. The EU has been working to promote volunteering for many years, and in 1996 set up the European Voluntary Service (EVS) to encourage young people to volunteer abroad in local communities.

The EVS provides young Europeans with the opportunity to carry out unpaid and full-time voluntary activities in a foreign country within or outside the EU. The aim is to develop solidarity, mutual understanding and tolerance among young people, and to promote young people's active citizenship.

This objective is also supported by Salto-Youth, a Commission-funded network of eight resource centres that provide training resources and organise activities to support youth workers and national agencies responsible for the implementation of the European Youth in Action Programme. SALTO EECA for example supports co-operation between programme and neighbouring partner countries from Eastern Europe and the Caucasus, while SALTO-Youth Euromed aims to promote Euro-Med cooperation, within the framework of the Youth in Action programme.

The European Year of Volunteering aims to encourage more people to get involved by making it easier to volunteer, rewarding volunteers, for example by formally recognising the skills they acquire in the course of their work, improving the quality of volunteering by providing training and matching volunteers to suitable vacancies and raising awareness of the value of volunteering.
