Füle: discussion in Ukraine was open and frank

The EU shares dynamic and open relations with Ukraine, EU Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Štefan Füle said in a joint press conference with Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Gryshchenko in Kyiv on 10 January. A press release from the EU Delegation to Ukraine quotes Füle as saying he had an “open and frank discussion” with the Ukrainian partners.

In particular, the talks focused on the “challenges of 2011, in the framework of the Eastern Partnership, including in particular the wider reform agenda, and in this context first and foremost progress on the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement, implementation of the Visa Action Plan, and the situation regarding human rights, democratic principles and the independence of the judicial system.”

The Commissioner said both sides were determined to conclude negotiations on the Association Agreement in the course of 2011, but underlined that the work on the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area aspects (DCFTA) was “complex and demanding”.
